Hepatitis A, B, and C

Hepatitis A, B, and C

Understanding Hepatitis: What’s the Difference Between Hep A, B, and C?

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, most often caused by a virus. Your liver plays an important role in filtering toxins, processing nutrients, and helping your body fight infection—so keeping it healthy matters.

There are several types of viral hepatitis, but the most common are Hepatitis A, B, and C. While they all affect the liver, they spread in different ways and are managed differently.

Lets review each Type individually:

Hepatitis A (HAV)

Hepatitis A is a short-term infection

· Is it chronic? ❌ No. It does not cause long-term infection

· Spread: Contaminated food or water, close personal contact with someone who is infected

· Symptoms: Fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, jaundice

· Treatment: Usually resolves on its own with rest and supportive care

· Prevention: A safe and effective vaccine is available

Hepatitis B (HBV)

Hepatitis B

· Is it chronic? ⚠️ Sometimes. Some people develop long-term infection

· Spread: Blood and body fluids, sexual contact, needles, birth exposure

· Symptoms: Often none; may include fatigue or jaundice

· Treatment: Chronic infection managed with antiviral medications

· Prevention: A vaccine is available and highly effective

Hepatitis C (HCV)

Hepatitis C

· Is it chronic? ✅ Yes — often becomes a long-term infection if untreated

· Spread: Blood exposure, sharing needles

· Symptoms: Often silent for years

· Treatment: Oral antiviral medications with cure rates over 95%

· Prevention: No vaccine; screening is essential

Final Thoughts

Hepatitis A, B, and C affect the liver in different ways, but early testing, vaccination, and treatment can prevent serious complications. An infectious disease specialist can provide diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care.
