Understanding HIV Prevention

Understanding HIV Prevention

Introduction

HIV prevention has come a long way, and PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) and PEP (Post-exposure Prophylaxis) are two powerful tools in reducing the risk of HIV transmission. Whether you're at high risk of exposure or have recently been exposed to HIV, these medications can offer significant protection. In this blog, we’ll explain what PrEP and PEP are, how they work, and who should consider using them.

What is PrEP?

PrEP is a medication taken before possible exposure to HIV. It’s used to prevent the virus from taking hold in the body if a person is exposed to HIV. People at high risk of contracting HIV, such as those who have HIV-positive partners or engage in unprotected sex, may benefit from taking PrEP as a daily preventive measure.

The two most common PrEP medications are Truvada (tenofovir/emtricitabine) and Descovy (tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine). When taken consistently as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV transmission.

How PrEP Works:

PrEP works by blocking the virus from replicating in the body if someone is exposed to HIV. It needs to be taken regularly to provide maximum protection. It is most effective when combined with other prevention strategies, such as condom use and regular testing.

Who Should Consider PrEP?

PrEP is ideal for individuals who are HIV-negative and at ongoing risk of contracting HIV. This includes people who:

  • Have an HIV-positive partner
  • Engage in unprotected sex with multiple partners
  • Inject drugs and share needles

What is PEP?

PEP is a short-term emergency treatment taken after potential exposure to HIV. It’s used to reduce the risk of HIV infection after unprotected sex, needle-sharing, or other high-risk activities. PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure to be effective, and the sooner it’s started, the better.

PEP involves taking a combination of HIV medications for 28 days. It’s considered a backup option and should not be used as a regular form of prevention.

How PEP Works:

PEP works by preventing the HIV virus from taking hold in the body. The treatment involves taking HIV medications that help block the virus from replicating. It’s important to begin PEP as soon as possible after potential exposure.

Who Should Consider PEP?

PEP is recommended for anyone who has had a potential exposure to HIV, including:

  • Unprotected sex with someone whose HIV status is unknown or who is HIV-positive
  • Sexual assault survivors
  • People who inject drugs and share needles
  • Individuals exposed to HIV through other means (e.g., healthcare workers with needle-stick injuries)

Why Regular Testing is Important with PrEP and PEP

If you’re considering PrEP or PEP, regular testing is crucial. We offer free full-panel STI testing to make sure you stay on top of your sexual health. For those on PrEP, it’s essential to have HIV testing and routine check-ups to ensure the medication is working effectively. For those using PEP, follow-up care is necessary to confirm that the treatment worked and that no HIV infection has occurred.

Next Steps

PrEP and PEP are powerful tools in HIV prevention. PrEP is for ongoing protection before exposure, while PEP is an emergency option after potential exposure. Both can significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission, but they must be used as part of a broader HIV prevention strategy that includes regular testing and safe sex practices.

If you think PrEP or PEP might be right for you, schedule a consultation with a healthcare provider. And don’t forget to take advantage of our free full-panel STI testing to stay informed about your sexual health.
