Condom Awareness

Condom Awareness

Let’s Talk Protection, Pleasure, and Sexual Health

February isn’t just about chocolates and roses. It’s also Condom Awareness Month, a time dedicated to normalizing safer sex, sharing accurate information, and empowering people to protect their sexual health without shame.

Condoms aren’t just about preventing pregnancy or STIs. They’re about choice, communication, and care for yourself and your partners. Let’s break it all down!

Why Condom Awareness Matters

Condoms are the only contraceptive method that helps protect against most sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy at the same time. When used correctly and consistently, they are highly effective. Yet myths, misinformation, and stigma still keep people from using them properly or at all.

There’s More Than One Option

Not all condoms are the same, and finding the right one can make sex safer and more enjoyable.

External Condoms – Worn over the penis.

  • Latex condoms The most common type. Effective, affordable, and compatible with most water- and silicone-based lubes.
  • Non-latex condoms Made from materials like polyurethane or polyisoprene which great for people with latex allergies.
  • Textured condoms Ribbed or dotted for added sensation.
  • Ultra-thin condoms Designed to increase sensitivity while still offering protection.

Internal Condoms – Worn inside the vagina or anus.

  • Provide protection against STIs and pregnancy
  • Can be inserted ahead of time
  • Made of nitrile (latex-free)
  • Give the receptive partner more control

Lube 101: Why It Matters (A Lot)

Using lubricant isn’t “extra”. It actually reduces friction, lowers the risk of condom breakage, and increases comfort and pleasure.

Types of Lube

Water-based lube

  • Safe with all condoms and sex toys
  • Easy to clean
  • May need reapplication

Silicone-based lube

  • Longer-lasting
  • Great for shower sex
  • Safe with condoms, but not all silicone toys

Oil-based lube

  • Not safe with latex condoms (can cause them to break)
  • Better for massage than barrier-protected sex

Sexual Health Facts Everyone Should Know

  • Condoms reduce the risk of HIV transmission by about 85% when used correctly.
  • Many STIs don’t show symptoms. Testing matters even if you feel “fine”.
  • Condoms expire (yes, really). Always check the date!
  • Heat and friction (like wallets or cars) can damage condoms.
  • Using two condoms at once increases friction and breakage. One is enough!

Condom Use Is Self-Care

Talking about condoms isn’t awkward, it’s responsible. Carrying one doesn’t mean you’re “expecting sex,” it means you’re prepared. Using protection shows respect for yourself and your partner.

This Condom Awareness Month, let’s:

  • Normalize safer sex conversations
  • Encourage regular STI testing
  • Share accurate information
  • Celebrating protection as empowerment
